Girls are neglected from inheritance in male-dominant Bangladeshi society. This trend is closely related to pre-Islamic Arabian culture where girls were totally deprived of any inheritance. To them, inheritance was only for those who could ride horses, defend the family and fight for the tribal solidarity. Mawlana Sayed Zillur Rahman has made profound contribution in reversing the order and treating her as respected heir of the deceased. His analysis was based on Qur’anic aayah and authentic Ahadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He deals with the issue of inheritance of daughter(s) when the deceased has no son(s). He proposes new term, ‘mawla’ to replace ‘asabah’. Based on the Qur’anic aayah (4: 33,176) he mentions that girls are ‘mawla’ of the deceased as equal as the boys, and that in the presence of daughters, other relatives like brothers or sisters, uncles or cousins will get no inheritance from the deceased. The book is highly useful and interesting to read. It opens new dimensions of thought. One may differ with him, but bound to respect his style of argumentation and profound knowledge of the original sources of Islam, Qur’an and Sunnah.
