During the great liberation war, the invading Pakistani army conducted many atrocious massacres throughout the whole country. Three million people lost their lives to their cruel hands. On one side, the freedom fighters sacrificed their lives on different battlefields. On the other hand, occupied forces rounded up the innocent and killed them to support the freedom struggle. Members of native forces Al Badrs, Al-Shams and the Razakars assisted them in carrying out these heinous and loathsome crimes. With the active support of these native collaborators, the Pakistani army conducted barbarous massacres in many different places of the Sylhet district. After the killings, the dead bodies of the victims were buried in mass graves or disposed of in open spaces. In very few exceptional cases, local people could arrange the funeral of the abandoned dead bodies. The killing fields and massgraveyards are the symbols of innumerable sacrifice of lives of the patriot mass people. In order to keep the spirit of the freedom struggle awake and pay homage to the sacrifice of all freedom fighters, several memory sculptures, memory monuments, memory plates, killing fields and mass graveyards were set up around Sylhet. Sylhet District/Monuments and Memorials intertwined with the Liberation War are a compilation of all such eventful episodes.
