The majority of surgical procedures in large animals especially in cattle and buffaloes can be done safely and painlessly with some form of physical restraint and regional and local anaesthesia.
In small animals, majority of operations would require the use of general anaesthesia. The restraint can either be achieved by use of simple means like nose twitch, nose-lead, elevating the tail over the back, use of chute etc. in large animals and tape muzzle in small animals or by use of sedatives and tranquilizers.
For effective physical restraint in large or small animals, the clinician should be quite familiar with the commonly used knots. Restraint achieved with tranquilizers and sedatives usually minimizes the amount of physical restraint and would also facilitate administration of general anaesthesia and reduce their dosage.
