Writing a historical account of our liberation movement at a distance of more than 50 years with a close focus on 1971 is not easy, considering the inadequacy of archival materials; the absence of firsthand accounts of the war-both by the combatants from our side, the Muktijoddhas or freedom fighters, and the victims, mostly unarmed civilians and ordinary people across the country; the difficulty of sifting through the narratives of the war by external commentators (overseas media correspondents, experts working in international agencies, declassified correspondences of different embassies, and researchers working on the liberation war) for relevant information; the inauthenticity and lack of neutrality of official materials; political bias of researchers who have written on 1971 and the confusion between truth and perception in many of their works, and a notable absence of whatis called 'soft history
