Heartiest greetings from a 'new world' I woke up to this morning! As I opened my eyes this morning, I noticed some rays of the sun brightening up parts of my face and body. The soothing hissing sound of the morning breeze whispered to my ears that I had entered a new phase of my life I was reminded of the fact that from today onwards, I am a 'former' teacher at the Department of Law, the University of Dhaka! Did it sadden me? Surely, because it carries with it another hidden truth of life, and it is that I am approaching the finishing line of life on this earth with each day passing. At the same time, I felt a sense of happiness that I was blessed to complete my whole teaching tenure at the university! As I reminisce, I can vividly see dear Borhan, Shahnaz and Sumaiya, and my late friend Dr Mohiuddin Farooque waiting in the Pro VCs room to appear before the selection board. As if it was only the other day, but in my case, 32 long years have lapsed! 32 years in a wink! Unlike others, I was not a former student at this university. So despite various limitations of being a 'newcomer', I had the opportunity and the privilege of bringing fresh air and infusing new blood into the body politic of the department. I became a teacher by choice, not by chance, and teaching is my passion. During all these years, I never compromised with the ethics of the profession and served my students with integrity, dedication and commitment. And as I look back today, I can confidently say that my years at the university were not wasted. When I was appointed the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, it brought honour and fame not only personally for me, but more than that, the Department and the University were also honoured and appreciated. When I began, we were only a handful of full-time teachers like Qamruddin Sir, ZIC sir, Hamiduddin Khan Sir, ARC Sir and Patwari Bhai.
