Bangladesh is a small country covering an area of 147,570 square kilometres. It is located between 20°34 to 26°38 N. latitude and 88°01 to 92°41 E. longitude. It enjoys sub-tropical climate. Its total population is estimated to be 140.8 million having population density of 953 per square kilometre in 2007. Eighty eight per cent of its people are Muslims. It is one of the developing countries having per capita income of US$ 520.0 in 2006.
The literacy rate of population, seven years and above in 2000 was 45 per cent which has now risen to over 60 per cent. About half of the country's population is poor and 52 per cent of its labour force is engaged in agriculture followed by service sector employing 35 per cent. Thirty to forty per cent are either unemployed or under-employed.
