The study of sound is discussed under Pure/Theoretical Linguistics. It includes the studies of Phonetics, i.e., human speech sounds and Phonology which discusses the system of sound for a particular language. There are about 44 sounds in English language; out of which 24 are Consonant sounds and 20 are Vowel sounds. These sounds are represented using the International Phonetic Alphabets; i.e., IPA symbols. English is not a phonetic language, i.e., the alphabets in English do not always represent the sounds. Therefore, the IPA symbols must be practiced, specially, by the students of Phonetics and Phonology to recognize, analyze, transcribe, and pronounce the correct sounds of English. This workbook contains exercises for Airstream Mechanisms, Articulatory Organs, Sound Types: Consonant and Vowel Sounds, Syllable Segments, Transcriptions, Syllable Structures, and Consonant Clusters which are the basics for phonetics and phonology. It also contains useful techniques for practice.
