Love's extra labor -- that's how I should describe Mabubur Rahman's (Mahbub Bhhai) translation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhy's classic Devdas. I do not know how fondly now the younger generation takes to this story of passionate love and its failure to reach fulfillment.
But there was a time when budding readers, defying guardians' ban, would pour over the story of young love and weep iconsolably over the tragic end of Devdas and Parbati, who failed to fulfill their love because of class barrier and parental obstinacy. The appeal of the story still abides though the readership may have changed. Devdas is our version of lovers' tragedy, epitomized in figures like Romeo- Juliet or Laily- Majnu and their kind.
