William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954) did not elicit an immediate critical response from the literary world just after its publication, because its unfamiliar and unfashionable look hardly captured the readers' imagination at that time. However, it earned the status of a best-seller within a few years after its publication and the readers accepted the book then, as an absorbing and instructive tale.
But neither Golding's novel nor any other by his contemporaries could innovate a new trend in the way the novels of Joseph Conrad, E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, among others, had done. The English novel since the Second World War, as said Gilbert Phelps, was "a turning aside from the mainstream of European literature," revealing "a tendency to retreat into parochialism and defeatism."1
