Ball cacti, also known as globe cacti or pearl cacti, are a unique and eye-catching group of plants that are perfect for those looking for a low-maintenance, yet striking addition to their indoor or outdoor garden. These cacti are native to South America and are part of the Parodia genus.
Ball cacti come in a variety of sizes, with most mature plants growing between 2 to 4 inches in diameter. They are known for their round, smooth surface and their distinctive, spherical shape. The color of ball cacti can range from green to yellow, and they may have spines or be spineless.
Parodia cacti, also known as brasiliopuntia, are small, globe-shaped cacti that come in a variety of colors and sizes. They are native to South America and are quite easy to care for when grown indoors. With the proper light, soil, and watering schedule, parodia cacti can thrive in containers.
Location: Parodia cacti prefer bright, sunny spots, but they should not be placed in direct sunlight. Place them near a south- or east-facing window so they can receive plenty of bright light.
Soil: A well-draining commercial potting mix is best for parodia cacti. You can also make your own mix by combining equal parts of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite.
Water: Parodia cacti prefer to be kept on the dry side. During the summer, water the cactus whenever the soil is dry to the touch. During the winter, water only when the soil is completely dry.
Fertilizer: Fertilize the parodia cactus once a month during the summer months with a cactus fertilizer. Don’t fertilize during the winter.
Pests: Parodia cacti are rarely bothered by pests. If you see signs of mealybugs or scale, treat them immediately with a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
Repotting: Repot the parodia cactus every two to three years, using a pot one size larger than the current one. Be sure to use a pot with drainage holes and use fresh potting soil.
