Snake plants are also known as mother-in-tongues, law's viper's bowstring hemp, and tiger's tail orchids. Their more exotic botanical name is "sansevieria," but you might also hear them called "mother-in-tongues" law's or "tiger's tail orchids."
These beautiful succulents come from western and southern Africa, but they also grow wild in places like Florida and Hawaii, which have warmer climates. Snake plants usually have wide leaves that grow straight up and narrow at the top, making a spike. Even though snake plants are all in the same family, they can look very different. Zey's tiger stripes and height make him more interesting, while Mikey's size and shape make him perfect for a shelf or a desk. Even though Apollo is the rarest of our snake plants, he is just as easy to take care of as Susie, who is a good all-arounder and comes in many sizes.
Is it hard to take care of a snake plant?
It's common knowledge that snake plants thrive when they're ignored. They thrive with just a little amount of water and then being left alone. We refer to them as "(nearly) unkillable" since they are so easy to care for, making them perfect for anybody who wants to start gardening but still has a hectic lifestyle and wants some greenery to keep them company.
You should know that snake plants are somewhat hazardous if swallowed, so keep them away from babies, small children, and pets. Despite the fact that this does not necessarily make them cold-blooded murderers, it is nevertheless wise to keep them away from children and pets.
How often should my snake plant be watered?
Snake plants don't need much water. Just give them a little bit of water when the soil feels very dry or crumbly, which is about once every two weeks in the summer and less often in the winter. Make sure you let the soil of your snake plant dry out completely between waterings. This will help keep the roots from getting rotten.
A bigger snake plant will need more water and will need to be watered more often.
What much of light does my snake plant require?
Snake plants are adaptable and will survive in virtually any light environment, with the exception of being trapped in a windowless chamber for decades.
What temperature is optimal for my snake plant?
Snake plants can live at most conditions, but like to be maintained in a warm location, preferably with temperatures over 10°C. In the winter, keep your plant away from drafty windows.
Because snake plants love dry circumstances, they should not be kept in the toilet. They will be far more content in your bedroom or living room.
The lighter and brighter the environment you choose for your snake plant, the happier it will be. But don't get too worked up over it. Your snake plant will adjust to whatever light it receives.
Is it necessary to repot my snake plant?
Unless its roots are bursting out of the bottom of the container, you may probably maintain your snake plant in its original nursery pot for a long time. Snake plants grow slowly and do not need repotting very frequently.
If yours seems to be outgrowing its original container, transplant it into a bigger nursery pot in spring, using a specialized houseplant or cactus compost. You may find our repotting guide here.
Because some snake plants grow rather tall, make sure your ornamental pot is substantial enough to prevent it from tipping over. Specification: |
