“Economic Crosscurrents” is a collection of short essays on: International Economics, Economic Policy, and Challenges of COVID-19. All the essays were previously published in The Daily Star Op-Ed section during 2017-21. They cover a range of topic including the Brexit negotiations, international trade issues, and economic policy. Dr. Shibli is a strong advocate for income equality, social issues, labor rights, and analytical rigor in policy discussions. I wish to thank my family, friends, and the writing community of Boston for their support, encouragement, interest, and constant feedback during the process of writing this book. All these essays were sent to the Editorial Team of The Daily Star, who reviewed and edited them as necessary. I am grateful to the editors, and specially Aasha Mehreen Amin, Senior Deputy Editor, Editorial and Opinion, of the newspaper. I would also like to extend my thanks to my Facebook friends who commented on drafts, provided me with ideas, and provided me with invaluable feedback on my column. I wish to thank my wife, Rumi, and my children Shakir and Naushin, for being the listening board for all my literary ideas. My brothers Abdullah Sayeed, Abdullah Shabbir, and Abdullah Saquib have been a source of many of my writing projects. I also wish to express my heart-felt gratitude to the members of Boston‘s cultural/literary groups Lekhoni and Bhin Golardho, particularly Saema Khan, Badiuzzaman Nasim, Milton, Iqbal Yousuf, and Abu Jalal for their support. Last, but not the least, my mother-in-law, Gulshan Anwara Haque has been my best reader and unwavering champion during the gestation period of this project. Without her faith in me, this book would have never been published.
