Product Specification & Summary

A flora is an inventory of the plants of a definite area. This inventory is usually authenticated by citations of herbarium speciments and of localities or stations where each element is known to have occurred. It is customary to arrange the plants treated in a flora according to a recognized system of classification (Lawrence 1951). But now a days, flora (lower case initial letter) refers to the plants of a particular area whereas a"Flora" (upper case initial letter) is a book or other work describing the flora of a given area, i.e. a Flora is an account of the flora of a particular area (Stace 1989).
W. Roxburgh, who was appointed (as) the Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic
Garden in 1793 was the pioneer of Indian botanical studies. He had initiated the
exploration of the flora of undivided Bengal. His successors, Buchanon-Hamilton and
Wallich further strengthened the foundation of our knowledge of the flora of this
region. Hooker and Thomson ascended the Surma river in 1850 from Sylhet to
Silchar and collected several hundred species. The other workers who collected
botanical specimens in the various regions now within Bangladesh were Clarke, King,
Griffith, Lister, Kurz, Gamble, Prain, Heinig, Cowan and Sinclair. Most of their
collections are preserved at Kew, Edinbugh and Calcutta. Collections made from
1930 onwards by the local botanists are preserved at Dhaka University Herbarium,
Bangladesh National Herbarium and the Forest Research Institute Herbarium,
Chittagong.
